The vehicles of the class GF of the South African Railways (SAR) were steam locomotives of the Garratt design . The 65 machines built by Hanomag , Henschel and Maffei in 1927 and 1928 formed the largest class of Garratt locomotives worldwide for many years. Only the class GMA / GMAM (120) and the class 15 / 15A of the Rhodesian Railways (74) later achieved even larger numbers.

The locomotives were the first Garratts in South Africa to receive bar frames. The driver's cabs had the characteristic lateral bevel in the upper area of German standard locomotives, which was otherwise not common in South Africa. The 1371 mm measuring drive wheels and the wheel arrangement (2'C1 ') (1'C2') ("Double Pacific") allowed higher speeds than the earlier Garratts.

Although the machines could reach speeds of up to 80 km / h, they were not only used for passenger trains, but also in freight train service, on both main and secondary lines. Two locomotives were taken out of service early after accidents, four were sold to Mozambique in 1950 and the others remained in service until the 1970s, after which some were taken over by industrial railways.

To make up for a lack of locomotives, the Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) bought four GF class locomotives (No. 2370, 2419, 2420 and 2432) in 1950 and gave them the track numbers 911 to 914. They stayed until at least the 1980s in service.

No. 2380 and 2401 are still operational; another locomotive, No. 2416, is currently being restored by the Patons County Railway .
