predecessor

In 1938, the “Friends of Gustave Courbet's Association” enabled an exhibition of the artist's works in the “Hôtel de Ville” (town house). A first museum existed from 1947 to 1970.

In 1970 the Friends of Gustave Courbet's association bought the "Haus Hébert" on the Loue , where Courbet spent part of his childhood. It dates from the 16th century and was restored by the Hébert family in the 18th century.

In 1971 the house was again restored and inaugurated on September 10, 1971 by Jacques Duhamel , Minister for Cultural Affairs. The first curator Robert Fernier died in 1977, his successor was his son Jean-Jacques Fernier until 2008.

The private association ran the house until 1976, when it transferred the museum to the Doubs department, which from then on assumed the costs of running it. The Friends of Courbet Association continued to look after the works and organize exhibitions. The purchase of two neighboring houses ( Hôtel Champereux 1994, Maison Borel 2003) made it possible to expand the museum.
