The 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 2nd, 2012. Like the first stage the day before, it was entirely on Belgian territory. It led from Visé over 207.5 km to Tournai . All 198 registered drivers started.

Participating teams

route

The route led in a westerly direction through the Belgian provinces of Liège , Namur , Hainaut and Walloon Brabant . The profile was extremely flat; there was only a fourth category mountain classification at the Namur Citadel , plus a sprint classification in Soignies . The stage was thus geared towards the sprinters.

Race course

At the start of the race, the field set a rather leisurely pace and there were no attempts to break away. It was only at kilometer 22 that French rider Anthony Roux broke away and quickly gained a considerable advantage. The Frenchman Christophe Kern and the Dane Michael Mørkøv joined him six kilometers later. The group of three had a lead of just under seven minutes and Mørkøv won the only mountain classification of the day.

The field was then able to slowly but continuously reduce the gap. Kern won the intermediate sprint ahead of Roux and Mørkøv. At this point the lead was just over two minutes. 30 kilometers from the finish, Roux shook off his companions, who were overtaken by the field shortly afterwards. Finally, Roux, who won the category of the most combative driver, was also overtaken 14 kilometers from the finish. Thus, as expected, there was a mass sprint at the finish, which Briton Mark Cavendish won just ahead of German André Greipel .
