Systomus sarana ( Syn .: Barbus orphoides , Puntius sarana ) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area extends from Afghanistan via Pakistan , India , Nepal , Bangladesh , and Myanmar to Thailand . It is also found in Sri Lanka .

features

Systomus sarana becomes 42 centimeters long and weighs a maximum of 1.4 kg. Their bodies are slimmer than most other South Asian barbels and their heads are small. The barbel have two pairs of barbels, one of which is longer than the diameter of the eye and the other is shorter. The basic color is silvery, the back shimmers green or brown, the paired fins and the anal fin are reddish.

Way of life

Systomus sarana occurs in rivers, streams and lakes, and also tolerates brackish water . It forms small schools of four to five fish or larger ones with several dozen specimens. Systomus sarana feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans , molluscs , worms, algae, detritus , phyto- and zooplankton . In the river basin of the Ganges , the fish reproduce from April to mid-September. The spawn is deposited in flowing water between plants. The IUCN classifies the species as Least Concern .
