McClelland , 1839 |
Systomus is a genus of small and medium-sized South Asian carp fish (Cyprinidae). The genus was established in 1839 by the British physician John McClelland, but was not recognized afterwards because the type species Systomus immaculatus is little known and the type specimens have apparently been lost. The genus was synonymous with Puntius . It was not until 1996 that the genuswas validated againby the American ichthyologist Walter Rainboth in order to classify some Cambodian barbel that had previously been placed in the genus Puntius . In 2011, the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat and his Singaporean colleague Tan Heok Huirecommendedusingthe generic name Systomus for Southeast Asian barbelsin their first description of Systomus xouthos , as only a few of these speciescan be assigned to Puntius sensu stricto (defined by the type species Puntius sophore ) . In July 2012, the genus was newly diagnosed by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage.
features
Systomus species normally reach a standard length of more than 8 cm as adult fish . The body of the Systomus species is laterally flattened and elongated. Diagnostic features of the genus are the presence of Rostral- and maxillary - Barteln and a dorsal fin 4 unbranched and branched fin rays 8, the last unbranched dorsal spine of the dorsal fin is stiff and strong perforated. The sideline is complete with 27 to 34 scales. The simple gill rakes are pointed and not branched or lamellar (flattened). Free uroneuralia are present, 5 vertebrae with spinous processes (supraneurals), 14 to 15 vertebrae in the abdomen and 17 to 19 in the caudal spine. Infraorbital bone number 3 (bones around the eyes) is slim. Color characteristics of the genus are an elongated, oval, dark spot on the tail stalk. Noticeable spots and bands are missing.
