Maurice Kottelat

Maurice Kottelat (born July 16, 1957 in Delémont , Switzerland ) is a Swiss ichthyologist who is best known for his taxonomic work on European freshwater fish and for his discovery of new freshwater fish in Indonesia, including some of the smallest fish species in the world. His research fields include the fish families Balitoridae , Nemacheilidae , Cyprinidae , Sisoridae and Salmonidae .

Life

In 1976 Kottelat enrolled at the University of Neuchâtel , where he received his diploma in 1987. In 1990 he received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam . 1980 began his field work in Thailand. In the following years he visited Laos, Indonesia, Mongolia and Greece. In 1997 he wrote a revision of the genus Coregonus , which affected several fish species in the Swiss foothills of the Alps and Lake Constance .

During his collaboration with Dr. Tan Heok Hui, curator at the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research in Singapore , discovered the freshwater fish Paedocypris progenetica in Sumatra in 1996 , the female of which is 7.9 mm long and is considered the smallest fish and one of the smallest vertebrates in the world.

From 1997 to 2007 Kottelat was President of the Société Européenne d'Ichthyologie , an association of European ichtyologists founded in 1976.

Kottelat described over 440 new fish taxa and published about 280 scientific publications. Since 1989 he has been editor of the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters .

Kottelat lives in Cornol in the Swiss canton of Jura .

Awards

In 1976 Maurice Kottelat received the Prix ​​de Jeune of the Société jurassienne d'Emulation (SJE).
