Jörg Freyhof

Jörg Arthur Freyhof (born November 4, 1964 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German ichthyologist and fish photographer.

Live and act

From 1986 to 1987 Freyhof attended the biological faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and from 1987 to 1993 the biological faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1993 he wrote his diploma thesis on the temporal and spatial distribution patterns of juvenile fish in the Sieg . From 1993 to 2000 he was a research assistant at the Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. Here he led research projects on the long-term fluctuations within the structures of fish communities in the Rhine basin and on the diversity and prospects for the sustainable use of fish fauna in the central mountain range of Vietnam . In 1997 he received his Ph.D. with a doctoral thesis on the interactions between the habitat and the fish communities in the Sieg. From June 2000 to April 2014 he was a scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in the Forschungsverbund Berlin eV (IGB).

Freyhof's main research areas include evolutionary ecology, biodiversity, systematics and speciation of European, Turkish and Vietnamese freshwater fish. He also took part in excursions to Cameroon, Egypt, the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and China.

The species first described by Freyhof include the Vietnamese cardinal fish , Sewellia albisuiera , Sewellia patella , Schistura susannae , Gobio delyamurei , Proterorhinus tataricus , Salvelinus evasus , Alburnus vistonicus and Capoeta turani .

Dedication names

In 2016 the brook loach species Oxynoemacheilus freyhofi from Iran and in 2017 the white fish species Alburnoides freyhofi from the catchment area of Kızılırmak in Turkey was named in honor of Jörg Freyhof.
