The redfin barbel ( Systomus orphoides , Syn . : Barbus orphoides , Puntius orphoides ) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area extends from Thailand ( Mekong , Mae Nam Chao Phraya and Mae Nam Mae Klong ) over the Malay Peninsula to the Indonesian islands of Borneo , Java and Madura .

The redfin barb becomes 25 centimeters long. Their bodies are slimmer than most other Puntius species and are covered in relatively large scales. The basic color is silvery, the back shimmers green or brownish, the sides of the body bluish. On the gill cover there is a blurred, red spot. Young fish have another dark spot on the base of their tail. The caudal fin is reddish or transparent and has black edges above and below. All other fins are red. A narrow black band runs on both sides from the gill openings to the base of the pelvic fins . Redfin barb have two pairs of barbels . The sexes do not differ in color.

The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is ossified and sawed at its rear edge.
Way of life
The redfin mullet occurs in rivers and streams, but especially in small rivers, streams and in the rainy season when it reproduces on flooded areas. Young fish appear in July and August. The adults leave the flooded areas from December to January.
use
The redfin barb is caught as food fish in its range. It is marketed fresh or, in Cambodia , made into prahok , a fish paste. The species is too big for aquarium use.
