Wassil Wassiljewitsch Kiryjenka , also Vasil Kiryienka ( Belarusian Васіль Васільевіч Кірыенка ; born June 28, 1981 in Homel , Belarusian SSR , USSR ) is a former Belarusian track and road cyclist .

Career

Kiryjenka achieved his first international success in 2005 in the Italian one-day race Coppa della Pace . In the same year he became the Belarusian time trial champion and was able to repeat this success in 2006. At the road world championships in Salzburg , he surprisingly finished sixth in the time trial. Until 2008, Kiryjenka appeared several times as the stage winner in smaller tours .

After winning a stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2008 and being world champion in points at the 2008 World Track Championships in Manchester , he received his first contract with a UCI ProTeam at the Caisse d'Epargne in 2009 . For this team - which was called Movistar Team from 2010 - he was able to win another stage at the Giro d'Italia in 2011 and with the Route du Sud his first international stage race.

At the 2012 UCI Road World Championships in Limburg , the Netherlands , he was able to build on the achievements shown in 2006 as a bronze medalist. At the end of the season he switched to the Sky ProCycling team and was set up for the Tour de France 2013 , which he had to leave after the 9th stage because the waiting period was exceeded . At the end of the 2013 season he was able to win a stage in the Vuelta a España .

At the first European Games in Baku in 2015 , he won the gold medal in the individual time trial. On September 23, 2015, he became world champion in the individual time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond .

On January 31, 2020, Kiryjenka announced his immediate retirement from professional cycling due to heart problems. He followed the advice of his doctors.
