Rohan Dennis (born May 28, 1990 in Ashford ) is an Australian track and road cyclist . He became world champion six times in the adult sector (as of 2019) and was the holder of the hour record from February 8 to May 2, 2015 .
Athletic career
At the beginning of his career, Dennis devoted himself primarily to track cycling. In 2006 he was Australian champion in the individual time trial in the youth class. The following year he was national junior track cycling champion in the team pursuit . On the road he won the prologue at the Casut-Cimolais 3 Giorni in Friuli. In the 2008 season Dennis was Australian junior track cycling champion in the single pursuit and points race . At the junior track cycling world championship, he won the silver medal in the singles and gold in the team pursuit. He was also successful in the team pursuit at the World Cup in Melbourne. On the road, he won a stage in the Tour of the Murray River . In 2010 and 2011 Rohan Dennis became world champion in team pursuit.
In 2013 Dennis signed a contract with the UCI ProTeam Garmin Sharp . At the Critérium du Dauphiné 2013 he was beaten in the time trial on the fourth stage in second only by time trial world champion Tony Martin and thus secured the yellow jersey of the overall leader. In 2014 he won a stage on the Tour of California . The following August, he switched to the BMC Racing Team in agreement with the Garmin team , in order to be able to work with the sports director Allan Peiper , as at the beginning of his road career at Garmin . With this team he won the team time trial title at the 2014 road world championships .
At the beginning of 2015, Dennis also won the third stage and thus his first race of the UCI WorldTour on the way to his overall victory at the Tour Down Under . On February 8, 2015, he improved the hour record held by Matthias Brändle in the Velodrome Suisse in Grenchen to 52.491 km. He remained the world record holder until May 2, 2015, when Alex Dowsett set a new record.
Dennis won the first stage of the Tour de France 2015 , which was held as an individual time trial. He completed the 13.8-kilometer course in Utrecht in 14:56 minutes and drove the fastest individual time trial in Tour history at 55.446 km / h . In the same year he won two stages and the overall standings in the USA Pro Challenge . In addition, Dennis was able to defend the world title in the team time trial with BMC , in the individual time trial he was sixth after a flat tire.
At the start of the 2016 season, Rohan Dennis became the Australian elite time trial champion for the first time. At the Olympic Games in Rio he missed the medal ranks by eight seconds after his handlebars broke on the last 15 kilometers. At the Tour of Britain , after an attack two kilometers from the finish, he won the seventh half-stage after finishing second in the time trial a few hours earlier and finally finished the tour in second place. At the Eneco Tour he won both the individual time trial, but lost his lead in the overall standings due to a fall on the last stage. At the end of the season he finished second in the team time trial with his team at the World Championships and, as in the previous year, was sixth in the individual time trial.
Dennis started the 2017 season with the aim of developing into an overall classification driver. After Dennis had to give up early due to a fall at the Giro d'Italia , the Australian won the opening time trial at the Tour de Suisse . At Tirenno-Adriatico he won the team time trial with his team, was able to keep his time losses within limits in the mountains and won the final time trial, defending his second place in the overall standings 25 seconds behind Nairo Quintana . Dennis described this success as a “big step towards becoming a Grand Tour rider.” At the Vuelta a España , he won the team time trial on the first stage and thus took the lead in a Grand Tour for the second time since 2015, but gave it on the next day and had to give up the tour before the start of the 16th stage. At the World Championships , Dennis fell in the time trial, which he finally finished 1:37 minutes behind Tom Dumoulin , and in the team time trial he won silver.
In 2018, Dennis became the national time trial champion for the third time in a row and won the time trial at the Abu Dhabi Tour and at Tirreno-Adriatico . At the Giro d'Italia he finished second in the opening time trial in Jerusalem, two seconds behind time trial world champion Tom Dumoulin. On the next stage, he then wore the overall leader's pink jersey by securing three bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint, and wore it up to the fifth stage. He became the third Australian after Bradley McGee and Cadel Evans to top the overall standings in all Grand Tours. In addition, Dennis won the 34.2 km time trial on stage 16 with a 14 second lead over Tony Martin . Finally, he finished the tour in 16th place. At the Vuelta a España , Dennis won the opening time trial in Málaga with six seconds ahead of Michał Kwiatkowski , thus winning a stage in all Grand Tours and becoming the 15th driver in history, the was able to triumph in the time trial at every Grand Tour. In the second time trial of the tour, Dennis also won with a gap of 50 seconds on teammate Joey Rosskopf and then left the tour to prepare for the World Championships in Innsbruck . There he was able to secure the world championship title in the 52.2 km time trial with 1:21 minutes ahead of last year's winner Tom Dumoulin.
For the 2019 season, Dennis moved to the Bahrain-Merida team , with whom he signed a two-year contract. He won the opening time trial of the Tour de Suisse 2019 . He gave up the subsequent Tour de France 2019 on the 12th stage in the refreshment zone without any apparent reason, which caused a stir in the media. He then did not contest races for several months. At the UCI Road World Championships 2019 in Yorkshire, England , he repeated his title success in the individual time trial from the previous year. He competed on a time trial bike from the manufacturer BMC and not on a model from the team sponsor Merida . The team management did not congratulate Dennis on his success and instead announced that the contract had already been terminated about two weeks earlier, whereas Dennis had called the arbitration committee of the Union Cycliste Internationale . Dennis signed a contract with Team Ineos for the 2020 and 2021 seasons
