The Santos Tour Down Under 2015 was the 17th edition of this cycling tour and took place from January 20th to 25th, 2015. The stage race was part of the UCI WorldTour 2015 and within this the first of 28 races. The route ran through the state of South Australia around the capital Adelaide . The race consisted of six stages with a total distance of 812.3 kilometers. The overall winner was Rohan Dennis from the US team BMC ahead of Richie Porte from the British team Sky and Cadel Evans , who is also from the BMC Racing Team. That put three Australians on the podium.
For Rohan Dennis it was the first victory in the Tour Down Under. He was the seventh Australian professional to win the tour. Overall, it was the tenth Australian victory in this race.
The winner of the sprint ranking was the South African Daryl Impey from the Australian Orica GreenEdge team . The mountain classification was decided by the Australian Jack Bobridge from the Australian team UniSA-Australia . Since the overall winner Rohan Dennis started as a junior driver, he also won the junior competition. The team ranking was won by the Spanish team Movistar . The Italian Manuele Boaro from the Russian team Tinkoff-Saxo was honored as the most combative driver .
On January 18, 2015, two days before the start of the tour, the race began with the People's Choice Down Under Classic criterion , which ran over 51 kilometers but did not count towards the overall standings. The German Marcel Kittel ( TGA ) won ahead of the Spaniard Juan José Lobato ( MOV ) and the Dutchman Wouter Wippert ( DPC ).

The 17 UCI WorldTeams of the 2015 season were eligible to start . In addition, the organizer gave wildcards to a UCI Professional Continental Team and to the Australian national team, which started under the name UniSA-Australia and is sponsored by the University of South Australia . The 19 participating teams competed with seven drivers each. This resulted in a starting field of 133 drivers from 23 nations. Those athletes who were born since January 1, 1990 were included in the ranking of the young drivers. In this ranking, 33 drivers drove, around 25 percent of the starting field. The drivers included four Germans and six Swiss. An Austrian was not at the start.

Stages
People's Choice Down Under Classic
The tour started on January 18, 2015, two days before the start of the actual tour, with the People's Choice Down Under Classic criterion . Before this race, the participating teams were presented to the spectators. The circuit led over 30 laps of 1.7 kilometers each through the metropolis of Adelaide . This resulted in a total distance of 51 kilometers. There were four premium sprints during the route. These were played after five, ten, 15 and 20 rounds. The 133 starters of the tour started, 130 of them made it to the finish. The German Marcel Kittel (TGA) won the mass sprint ahead of the Spaniard Juan José Lobato (MOV) and the Dutchman Wouter Wippert (DPC). Kittel was able to repeat his success from the previous year. It was the fourth German victory in a row on this criterion. Overall, it was the fifth German success after the victories of André Greipel (2008, 2012 and 2013) and Marcel Kittel (2014 and 2015).

1st stage
The first stage took place on January 20th and was a hill stage over 132.6 kilometers from Tanunda to Campbelltown . During the route there were two sprint classifications and one mountain classification. For the first stage, all 133 registered drivers started, all of whom also reached the finish. The stage was won by Jack Bobridge (AUS) ahead of Lieuwe Westra (AST) and Luke Durbridge (OGE). Jack Bobridge thus took the lead in the overall standings - with a four-second lead through time bonuses. At the same time he was the leader in the sprint and mountain classification. The best young driver was Luke Durbridge, who placed third, the best team was the UniSA-Australia team . The most combative driver of the stage was Luke Durbridge.
2nd stage
The second stage took place on January 21st and was a low mountain range over 150.5 kilometers from Unley to Stirling . During the route there were two sprint classifications and one mountain classification. For the second stage, all 133 drivers started, 132 of them made it to the finish. The stage was won by Juan José Lobato (MOV) ahead of Daryl Impey (OGE) and Gorka Izagirre (MOV). Jack Bobridge (AUS) remained the leader in the overall and mountain classification . Juan José Lobato took the lead in the sprint classification. The best young driver after this stage was Niccolò Bonifazio (LAM), the best team was the Movistar team . The most combative driver of the stage was Thomas De Gendt (LTS).

3rd stage
The third stage took place on January 22nd and was a low mountain range over 143.2 kilometers from Norwood to Paracombe . During the route there were three sprint classifications and one mountain classification. For the third stage, 131 riders started, all of whom also reached the finish. The stage was won by Rohan Dennis (BMC) ahead of Cadel Evans (BMC) and Tom Dumoulin (TGA). Thanks to the stage win, Rohan Dennis was also able to take the lead in the overall and - since he started as a junior driver - in the junior ranking. He was also the leader of the mountain classification. Cadel Evans took the lead in the sprint classification, the best team was Team BMC . The most combative driver of the stage was William Clarke (DPC).

4th stage
The fourth stage took place on January 23rd and was a hill stage over 144.5 kilometers from Glenelg to Mount Barker . During the route there were two sprint classifications and one mountain classification. For the fourth stage, 131 drivers started, of whom 130 made it to the finish. The stage was won by Steele Von Hoff (AUS) ahead of Daryl Impey (OGE) and Wouter Wippert (DPC). Rohan Dennis (BMC) defended the lead in the overall and junior ranking. He lost the mountain classification to Jack Bobridge (AUS). The leader in the sprint classification was now Daryl Impey, the best team was still Team BMC . The most combative driver of the stage was Cédric Pineau (FDJ).

5th stage
The fifth stage took place on January 24th and led as a low mountain stage over 151.5 kilometers from McLaren Vale to Willunga Hill . During the route there were two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications. For the fifth stage, 126 drivers started, of which 125 made it to the finish. The stage was won by Richie Porte (SKY) ahead of Rohan Dennis (BMC) and Rubén Fernández (MOV). Rohan Dennis defended the lead in the overall and junior rankings. There was no change in the leadership positions in the sprint or mountain classification either, and Daryl Impey (OGE) and Jack Bobridge (AUS) defended their jerseys. The Movistar team regained the lead in the team classification . The most combative driver of the stage was Greg Henderson (LTS).

6th stage
The sixth stage took place on January 25th and led as a flat stage over 90 kilometers through Adelaide . 20 laps of 4.5 kilometers each were driven. During the route there were two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications. For the sixth stage 125 riders started, of which 121 arrived at the finish and thus ended the tour. The stage was won by Wouter Wippert (DPC) ahead of Heinrich Haussler (IAM) and Boris Vallée (LTS). The stage brought no more changes to the wearers of the rating jerseys. Rohan Dennis (BMC) won the overall and the junior classification, Daryl Impey (OGE) the sprint and Jack Bobridge (AUS) the mountain classification. The Movistar team also defended the lead in the team classification. The most combative driver of the stage was Manuele Boaro (TCS).

The overall standings were decided by Rohan Dennis (BMC) with a total time of 19:15:18 hours. He captured the ocher-colored jersey, officially Santos Tour Down Under Ocher Leader's Jersey , by winning the third stage and defended it until the end of the tour. Second place went to Richie Porte (SKY), just two seconds behind. Another BMC rider, Cadel Evans, followed in third place, 20 seconds behind the overall winner . Thus, only drivers from the host country Australia were on the podium. In the overall standings, 121 out of 133 riders who had started were classified after the last stage.

Sprint scoring
The South African Daryl Impey (OGE) won the sprint with 55 points, although he did not win any stage. He captured the red jersey, officially iiNet Sprint Jersey , on the 4th stage and defended it on the last two stages. In second and third place followed the Italian Niccolò Bonifazio (LAM) with 39 points and the Australian Cadel Evans (BMC) with 37 points. A total of 50 drivers were able to achieve points in this ranking, which also ended the tour.

Mountain scoring
The Australian Jack Bobridge (AUS) won the mountain classification with 36 points. He captured the blue-dotted jersey, officially the Subaru King of the Mountain Jersey , during the 1st stage, then lost it to his compatriot Rohan Dennis (BMC) at the 3rd stage and recaptured it during the 4th stage and defended it then until the end of the tour. Rohan Dennis followed in second and third with 34 points and the Australian Richie Porte (SKY) with 22 points. A total of 23 drivers were able to achieve points in this ranking, which also ended the tour.

Most combative driver
The jury selected the Italian Manuele Boaro (TCS) as the most combative driver of the tour . He was also the most combative driver of the 6th stage. The award-winning drivers received the green jersey after each stage, officially Europcar Most Competitive Rider Jersey . However, the jersey could not be worn on the following stage, as only four rating jerseys can be worn during a stage.
