Tiago Machado at the Tour de France 2017

Tiago José Pinto Machado (born October 18, 1985 in Vila Nova de Famalicão ) is a Portuguese cyclist .

Tiago Machado began his career in 2005 with the Portuguese cycling team Carvalhelhos-Boavista . In his second year he was first overall at the Volta a Terras de Santa Maria . He was also the Portuguese time trial champion in the U23 class. He repeated this success in 2007 in the U23 and 2009 in the elite class. His greatest international success to date was in 2014 with the overall victory of the Tour of Slovenia .

After he was promisingly third in the overall standings at the Tour de France 2014 , Machado had a hard crash during the 10th stage . He was already in the ambulance when he decided to resume the race. Although he and his teammate Andreas Schillinger reached the finish line outside of the parental leave period , both were allowed to continue the race.
