Norwood

Norwood is a district of Adelaide with 5800 inhabitants in the Australian state of South Australia . It is located about 4 kilometers east of the city center and is the seat of the administrative region (LGA) of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters City . With its establishment on July 7, 1853, it is the oldest independent administrative unit outside of Adelaide in South Australia.

history

Norwood is named after Norwood in London . The first planning and land allocation took place in 1847. In the early 1850s, a group of people began to work for a joint administration of the three neighboring towns of Norwood, Marryatville and Kensington , which was then established on July 7, 1853. In 1859 the first town hall in South Australia was opened in Norwood. A water and gas network was established in the 1860s, and in 1878 Norwood was connected to the Adelaide public transport network by a horse-drawn tram. The old town hall was replaced by a new, two-story building in 1883. With its location on Norwood's main street, The Parade , it is still the center of the district today.
