Gianni Meersman (born December 5, 1985 in Tielt ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

In 2001 Gianni Meersman was two-time Belgian youth champion on the track , in the omnium and in the points race . The following year he won the Belgian junior title in the single pursuit . In the following years he mainly started on the street . In 2004 Meersman won the Circuit van Henegouwen . In the 2005 season he won three stages of the Namur Tour and the overall ranking.

In 2007 Meersman signed a contract with the US ProTeam Discovery Channel . After stage successes in 2007 and 2008, he won the Circuit des Ardennes in 2011 . In 2012 he won one stage each of the Algarve Tour and one from Paris – Nice , in 2014 he won the Tour de Wallonie and in 2015 the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race as well as another stage of the Algarve Tour. In 2016 he won the second and fifth stages of the Vuelta a España .

At the end of the 2016 season, Meersman had to end his cycling career "with a pain in his heart" because he was diagnosed with heart rhythm problems during a routine check . Out of consideration for his wife and daughter, he does not want to take any health risks.
