Life

In 2010 Demoitié drove as a trainee with the Belgian Continental Team Lotto-Bodysol and got a regular contract there for the following season. In 2012 he drove for Idemasport-Biowanze , for which he won a stage at Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux , two stages at the Carpathia Couriers Path and a section at Triptyque Ardennaise. He also won the road race of the Liège provincial championship . The following year, Demoitié moved to Wallonie-Bruxelles and again won the road race of the provincial championship. In 2014 he achieved his most important international success in the one-day Tour du Finistère . In 2015 he won a stage of the Circuit des Ardennes . After his involvement with smaller teams, Demoitié received a contract with the Professional Continental Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert in 2016 and also competed in the UCI WorldTour .

On March 27, 2016, Demoitié fell at the classic Gent – Wevelgem and was hit by an escort motorcycle and seriously injured in the head before he could get up. He was admitted to the Lille hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries that same day. According to his colleague Gaëtan Bille on Twitter , Demoitié is said to have been an organ donor ; three patients received his organs.

After several accidents with accompanying motorbikes had occurred in the previous months at bike races - for example, the future world champion Peter Sagan had given up the Vuelta a España 2015 injured because of such an accident - and therefore criticism of their driving style had arisen, the team management of Wanty- Groupe Gobert the motorcyclist in protection. In contrast to the other accidents, this one did not drive too fast and was not to blame for the tragic incident. The rider is a very experienced man who has been cycling for 20 years and who has tried in vain to avoid the fallen riders in front of him. This account was confirmed by a journalist who was an eyewitness. The autopsy failed to confirm that Demoitié was fatally injured in the collision with the motorcycle; It is also possible that in the fall he himself suffered the serious injury from which he died. His organs were donated to three people.

In view of this and previous accidents, cyclists Alberto Contador , Daniel Oss and Michael Rogers , among others, demanded stricter regulations for the accompanying motorcycles from the UCI and CPA .
