Tiesj Benoot (born March 11, 1994 in Gent ) is a Belgian racing cyclist . He is considered a strong sprinter and classic specialist , but also achieves success in mountainous terrain.
Career
Benoot, who studies economics at the University of Ghent , drove for farm teams of the Belgian UCI World Team Lotto Soudal in 2013 and 2014 . In 2013 he won the second stage of the U23 edition of the Vuelta a la Comunidad de Madrid .
At the end of the 2014 season he drove as a stagiaire for the WorldTeam and received a regular contract for 2015. In his first year with this team, he took top places in World Tour races : He was fifth in the “Monument” Tour of Flanders - after a very active driving style - and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal and overall eighth place in the Eneco Tour . He also took fourth place in the classic Paris-Tours and came second overall on the Tour of Belgium .
In 2016 Benoot u. a. Third in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and fifth overall in the Tour of Poland . With the Tour de France 2017 he contested his first Grand Tour and finished the tour in 20th place overall. His first victory in a UCI WorldTour race was the Strade Bianche 2018 by shaking off his last companions 12 kilometers from the finish. He then finished fourth overall in Tirreno-Adriatico , fifth in E3 Harelbeke and eighth in the Tour of Flanders . His best results in the 2019 season were fourth overall in the Tour de Suisse , ninth place in the Tour of Flanders and second in the Bretagne Classic three seconds behind the winner Sep Vanmarcke as well as a stage win on the Tour of Denmark .
After four years at Lotto , Bennot joined the Sunweb team in 2020 . He won the hilly 6th stage from Paris-Nice as a soloist. On the ascent of the 7th stage, which should actually be the penultimate stage of the stage race shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he attacked the overall leader Maximilian Schachmann two kilometers from the finish, finished second and also second in the overall standings with just 18 seconds Residue.
