Race course
After just five kilometers, a ten-man breakaway group pulled away, which was able to pull out a lead of between four and five minutes over the peloton. The group was overtaken on the climb at Cipressa . There were breakaway attempts by Tom Dumoulin ( Sunweb ), among others . After the descent, it briefly looked as if a group of ten around Tony Gallopin ( Lotto Soudal ) and Philippe Gilbert (QuickStep) could break away from Peter Sagan and the other favorites. Until the last climb of the day, the Poggio, the field was brought together again. Shortly before the highest point, Sagan attacked in one of the steepest sections. Only Alaphilippe and Kwiatkowski could follow. The trio extended their lead in the downhill to 16 seconds and saved five of them at the finish. In the final sprint, Kwiatkowski narrowly prevailed against Sagan, who had taken over most of the leadership work. Alexander Kristoff ( Katusha-Alpecin ) won the sprint of the main field .
