This group was given a lead of a maximum of 5 minutes. 50 kilometers from the finish, on the ascent of the Jaizkibel , the leading group was caught up again. Imanol then attacked Erviti (Spain / Movistar) on the Jaizkibel and went downhill as a soloist. However, a short time later he was put back by the next larger group. After no professional cyclist was able to break away decisively in the Arkale , Gianni Moscon (Italy / SKY) placed his attack a good 30 kilometers from the finish. Moscon was able to drive 40 seconds. He was caught up again on the last climb, the Murgil Tontorra . On this ascent, a good 7 kilometers before the finish, Mikel Landa (Spain / SKY), Tony Gallopin (France / Lotto Soudal) and Bauke Mollema (Netherlands / Trek) were able to pull away and started the following descent together. Tom Dumoulin (Netherlands / Sunweb) and Michał Kwiatkowski (Poland / SKY) were able to catch up with the trio 4 kilometers from the finish . With 1500 meters to go, Landa wanted to reach the finish as a soloist and attacked. Dumoulin followed him and a short time later the two were caught again.
