Allan Peiper (born March 26, 1960 in Alexandra , Victoria ) is a retired Australian cyclist .
He grew up in difficult circumstances. His father was an alcoholic and prone to domestic violence , while his mother worked as a sole breadwinner to the point of exhaustion. His grandfather was already a successful cyclist and Allan also began at a young age with the sport, in which he found fulfillment that his parents could not offer him. Avoiding formal education, he often preferred training to school and became the Australian junior champion in the singles pursuit . Peiper began working in a factory, saving his monthly wages to finance a trip to Europe. At the age of 16, he finally moved to the Belgian city of Ghent in 1976 . There he was accommodated in a shared room in the house of a butcher , before shortly afterwards he was taken in by the family of Eddy Planckaerts , two years his senior , with whom he mostly trained together during this time. During a later stay in Australia he met Peter Brotherton , who trained him from then on and accompanied his development to a professional athlete.
In 1982 Peiper joined an internationally successful sports club from Boulogne-Billancourt and received a professional contract from the Peugeot-Shell-Michelin team a year later due to extremely convincing performance . In the following decade he secured numerous titles and racing victories. In addition to the success of the stage at the Critérium du Dauphiné , the five stages of the Herald Sun Tour won and the victory in the overall classification of the Tour of Sweden deserve special mention . Two years before the end of his active career, he also managed to win a stage at the Giro d'Italia in 1990 - one of the three "Grand Tours".
Nowadays Peiper works as a cycling manager and has worked for the T-Mobile team , among others . At the end of 2006 he was the sports director of the Davitamon-Lotto team and in 2008 he joined the HTC-Highroad team as one of the sports director . Peiper is considered one of the mentors of young Mark Cavendish in the early days of his career.
