Sam Oomen (born August 15, 1995 in Tilburg ) is a Dutch cyclist .
Career
Sam Oomen won in 2012 and the Swiss stage race GP Rüebliland . In 2013 he became Dutch champion in the junior individual time trial. In early 2014, Oomen signed a contract with the Rabobank Development Team . After winning the U23 Paris Tours and the overall ranking of the Tour des Pays de Savoie in 2015 , he got a contract with the German UCI WorldTeam Team Giant-Alpecin . At the Tour de l'Ain 2016 in France , he won a stage and won the overall standings.
In 2017 the Dutchman made his debut at the Vuelta a España , which he had to give up on the 14th stage due to illness. At the end of the season he was also world champion in the team time trial together with the drivers of the Sunweb team .
In 2018, Oomen competed in the Giro d'Italia in the role of helper for last year's winner Tom Dumoulin , who he finished ninth in the overall classification and third in the junior classification. He was also runner-up in the team time trial with the Sunweb team at the 2018 UCI Road World Championships .
At the Giro d'Italia 2019 , Oomen fell during the 14th stage and broke his hip . He contested this race despite an upcoming operation for a narrowed pelvic artery , which was made afterwards and ended his season.
