Teun van Vliet (born March 22, 1962 in Vlaardingen ) is a Dutch sports director and former cyclist .
Athletic career
As a junior, Teun van Vliet was Junior World Champion in points racing in 1979 , and the following year he won the national junior title in this discipline.
From 1984 to 1990 Teun van Vliet was a professional and rode in the Panasonic team under Peter Post . His greatest successes were his victory in 1984 at the Circuit de Lorraine and 1986 at the Grand Prix d'Isbergues and in 1987 his overall victory at the Tour of the Netherlands , at Gent – Wevelgem and at the Omloop Het Volk . In 1984 he was third in the Lombardy Tour , in 1985 second in Milan – Sanremo and in 1987 also second in Paris – Tours . In 1987 he won the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse . He started four times in the Tour de France ; In 1988 he won a stage and wore the yellow jersey for three days .
At the UCI Road World Championships in 1987 in Villach , van Vliet finished seventh. In the book Teun van Vliet - Drank, vrouwen, de koers en de dood , published in 2010 , written by the Dutch journalist Guido Bindels , van Vliet blames intrigue and deception for the fact that he did not become world champion.
After finishing his active sports career, van Vliet acted, among other things, as the sports director of the Farm Frites team . Since 2011 he has been organizing the Teun van Vliet Classic , a charity bike race, the proceeds of which are donated to charity.
Diseases
In 1990 van Vliet ended his cycling career due to persistent abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with intestinal inflammation and given a stoma . Ten years later he developed a brain tumor and initially recovered, but the disease reappeared in 2006. As a result of the chemotherapy that followed, he lost his ability to speak and coordinate. Van Vliet was able to regain most of his skills in the following years and was cancer free from 2012.
family
His sister is the former cyclist Nita van Vliet , who became Dutch road champion in 1977, and he is the uncle of her son Arjen de Baat , who was also active as a cyclist.
