The 13th stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 17th led over 200 km from Vittel to Colmar . It contained 3 intermediate sprints and 5 mountain classifications in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd categories. This stage should initially be carried out without radio traffic at the initiative of the tour managers, but after massive pressure from the teams, radio traffic was allowed again.

On the climb to the Col du Platzerwasel, Óscar Freire and Julian Dean were injured with an air rifle by an as yet unknown person. Freire was injured in the thigh, Dean was inflicted a light wound on the index finger. Freire's team, Rabobank, announced that it would drop the case for reporting.
