The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 6th led over 196.5 km from Marseille to La Grande Motte . It contained three intermediate sprints and two mountain classifications in the 4th category.

About 30 kilometers from the finish there was a break in the main field: Of the top 10 in the overall standings at the beginning of the stage, only Fabian Cancellara , Tony Martin and record tour winner Lance Armstrong remained in the 27-man top group, while stars like Alberto Contador , Andreas Klöden , Levi Leipheimer , all Astana , defending champion Carlos Sastre from Cervélo Test Team , Cadel Evans from Silence-Lotto and also Girosieger and ex-Vuelta winner Denis Menchov from Rabobank did not make it. Even drivers who had the prospect of a stage win could not keep up, such as Menchov's teammate Óscar Freire , and Tom Boonen was not brought into position by Quick Step fast enough to reach the group.

Since this group fell apart again in the end, and the teams that had drivers in the 27-strong leading group did not want to participate consistently in the pursuit work, the peloton crossed the finish line 40 seconds behind.

Drivers like Martin and Armstrong were able to use this to jump from 8 to 2 and from 10 to 3 in the overall standings. Even Linus Gerdemann of Milram team and the Belgian Maxime Monfort could advance to finish in the top 10 overall.
