Mecistogaster pronoti is an extremely rare or already extinct species of dragonfly from Brazil , which was only known from one female described in 1918.

features

The only known specimen has a body length of 60 millimeters. The abdomen measures 54 millimeters, the length of the fore wings is 41 millimeters, that of the hind wings 40 millimeters and the width of the hind wings 8 millimeters. The top of the head, upper lip, and epistome are black, and the lower lip is yellow. The black prothorax shows a fine margin on the posterior lobe. The front of the thorax is black-brown, otherwise pale bronze. The hips and thigh rings are pale yellow with dark spots. The legs and rails are black, as are the tarsi . The narrow, red-yellow claws have dark tips. The upper part of the abdomen is black-brown, otherwise it is colored blue with a metallic sheen. The underside of the abdomen is yellowish in color. The wings are translucent with a faint hint of pale yellow wing painting in the costal field . The extreme tips of the wings are milk white. The fore wings have about 37 to 40 postcostals .

status

Mecistogaster pronoti comes or occurred in the Mata Atlântica in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo . The terra typica was badly affected by deforestation and the species has not been found again since 1918 despite searches. The IUCN classifies this dragonfly in the "critically endangered" category.
