The 16th stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 21, after the second rest day of the three weeks, led over 159 km from Martigny in Switzerland via Italy to Bourg-Saint-Maurice . After about 30 kilometers, the pass of the Great St. Bernard Pass was reached at 2,469 meters with an average gradient of 6.2% ( rated as Hors Catégorie and awarded a special price for the first), then through the Italian Aosta Valley again to the Ascent to the Kleine St. Bernhard at 2,188 m. The stage ended with the descent into the French Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the Isèretal and contained two intermediate sprints and the two mountain classifications. After the attack by Andy and Fränk Schleck from Alberto Contador on the ascent to the Kleiner St. Bernhard was unsuccessful, Lance Armstrong managed to drive up to Contador again.

For the Basque team Euskaltel , Mikel Astarloza won the first stage since Iban Mayo in L'Alpe d'Huez 2003. The peloton failed to catch the eight outliers in the end, and the favorites crossed the finish line 59 seconds after the winner Astarloza the Frenchman Christophe Moreau, who was far behind in the overall standings, crossed the finish line in ninth place directly in front of the overall leader Alberto Contador . The biggest loser was Cadel Evans , who was second to the Tour in 2007 and 2008 and lost 3:55 minutes to Astarloza and 2:56 minutes to the other favorites.

Positive doping test

On July 31, 2009 it was announced that the winner of the stage, Astarloza, had tested positive for the blood doping agent EPO during a training check on June 26, 2009 - before the start of the Tour de France . If the B-sample confirms this, Astarloza threatens a retroactive ban and thus the withdrawal of the results of the Tour of France.
