Gorka Verdugo Marcotegui (born November 4, 1978 in Etxarri-Aranatz ) is a former Spanish cyclist .

Career

In 2001 Gorka Verdugo first attracted attention when he finished second on the first stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a Navarra . In 2002 and 2003 he won the Spanish one-day race Bayonne-Pamplona . In 2003 he finished third in the overall standings of the Bizkaiko Bira after finishing second on the third stage.

Verdugo began his professional career in 2004 with the Basque cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi and has participated in the UCI ProTour with this team since 2005. In 2008, Verdugo took seventh place overall in the ProTour stage race Paris – Nice .

In 2005, Verdugo took part in his first three-week tour of the country , the Giro d'Italia , and finished it as 68th overall. In the coming year Verdugo took part in the Tour de France for the first time and finished it in 74th place, two and a half hours behind. In the following years he always took part in the Tour de France and was able to complete it until 2012 , when he had to give up due to the consequences of a fall. His best result was 25th place overall in 2011 . He drove the Vuelta a España in 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . In 2012 he reached 11th place in the overall ranking.

With the closure of his Euskatel team, he ended his career at the end of the 2013 season. In his last major tour of the country, the Vuelta a España 2013 , he finished 63rd.
