The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2009 on July 12th led over 160.5 km in the Pyrenees from Saint-Gaudens to Tarbes . It contained 3 intermediate sprints and 2 mountain ratings (1st category with 15 points on the Aspin and one of the Hors Catégorie ; 40 points on the Tourmalet).

Stage winner and runner-up Pierrick Fédrigo and Franco Pellizotti both belonged to the three breakaway groups for a long time, most of whose drivers could be swallowed back from the field by the time they reached the finish.
