The Rotach , in Westallgäu Rothach called, is a 17 km long, right-hand or eastern tributary of the Bregenzer Ach . The water, which is untypical for the area, is red-brown in color and gave the Rotach its name. Experts describe the river landscape as diverse, rare and beautiful.

Upper course

The river rises in the district of Lindau (Lake Constance) west of Lindenberg in the Allgäu, still in the municipality of Scheidegg and initially bears the name Mühlbach. The Mühlbach leaves Lindenberg northeast in a lonely forest valley parallel to the former Röthenbach-Lindenberg railway line above, turns south, passes the Fidenmühle and reaches the Ellhofen-Moos district of the market town of Weiler-Simmerberg . Here the Angerbach from the Angertal joins from the left and the common body of water is called Rothach from here on. In the Rothach district, the Rothach flows around the hamlet of Weiler at a considerable distance and only meets the Hausbach flowing to the left in the Bremenried district, which comes from the ravine of the same name.

Middle course

The Rothach now determines the cozy character of the wide meadow valley, which runs constantly in a south-westerly direction, and reaches the Siebersquelle and Bad Siebers with its medicinal baths used in the Middle Ages. The source is a state-approved mineral well and has been owned by the Post Brewery Weiler since 1989 .

The Rotach then passes the district of Eyenbach, remains in its idyllic valley floor undisturbed by traffic routes and leaves the border town of Neuhaus (Scheffau) at the top right and then Thal at the top left. In this area, the Rotach forms the border between Germany and Austria .

Lower course

After crossing under the connecting road Doren-Langen, the river landscape suddenly loses its contemplative character. The Rotach plunges as a wild mountain river into an undeveloped forest ravine and as such later flows into the similar Bregenzer Ach. On this impassable section, the Rotach formally separates the municipal areas of Doren and Langen in the front Bregenzerwald . Together with the Weißach and the Bregenz Achs, it forms a unique large-scale biotope. At the Rotach there is an originality and an intact river system from the Austrian border to the confluence with the Bregenzer Ach.
