Xertigny is a French town with 2611 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Épinal .
geography
The approximately 50 km² municipal area of the city of Xertigny lies on average 460 meters above sea level and extends on the high plateau of the Vôge , which is cut through by the valleys of the small rivers Ruisseau l'Aitre and Ruisseau de Cone . The rivers drain to the upper Côney and thus belong to the Saône river system . In the south of the municipality, the terrain rises to over 600 m. Several ponds were created in this area, of which the Étang des Mottes is the largest and covers almost ten hectares. A 15 km² large, contiguous forest area spreads north and east of Xertigny. The Canal des Vosges runs past Xertigny to the west.
The districts of Amerey, Granges, La Gare, Le Charmois, La Regingotte, Le Bozet, Les Granges Richard, Moyenpal and Rasey belong to Xertigny .
Neighboring municipalities of Xertigny are Uzemain and Hadol in the north, Raon-aux-Bois in the northeast, Bellefontaine in the east, Plombières-les-Bains in the south, La Chapelle-aux-Bois in the west and Charmois-l'Orgueilleux in the northwest.
history
Xertigny emerged from the Certinium camp on the Roman road from Bains-les-Bains to Baccarat . A parish of Sainte Walburge is documented as early as 730 and an administration for 1335.
When the French communes were formed in 1790, Xertigny was one of the 60 main towns in the former canton of Vosges. With the completion of the Viaduc de Granges , a 38 meter high bridge, Xertigny received a railway connection in 1861. The first brewery was founded in 1865 and existed under the name La Lorraine until 1966. The Château des brasseurs castle was built in 1888.
After being destroyed in World War II, the Sainte-Walburge church in Xertigny was reconstructed in 1951. The church windows by Gabriel Loire were given new stained glass depicting , among others, Arnulf von Metz , Blasius von Sebaste and Joan of Arc .

The coat of arms of Xertignys in the colors of the Lorraine coat of arms shows three cross anchors instead of three mutilated eagles in the sloping beam . The anchor shape symbolizes the X , the first letter of the city name.

Economy and Infrastructure
In addition to many small craft and service companies, a metal construction company (Valentin SA) is located in the Moyenpal district . The company TEMCA , which manufactures industrial goods from polyester , epoxy resin , polyurethane and vinyl ester resin , is also headquartered in Xertigny. Furthermore, one in the city brigade of the gendarmerie stationed. In Xertigny there are five florists, two bakeries, an optician, a gas station, a bookstore and a grocery store. 44 farms are located in the 50 km² area of Xertigny (cultivation of grain, potatoes, flax and vegetables, dairy farming, breeding of cattle, sheep, goats and poultry).

Transport links
In Xertigny, Départementsstrasse 3 ( Charmois-l'Orgueilleux - Remiremont ) crosses national road 434 ( Épinal - Vesoul ). Xertigny is linked to the national road network via Épinal in the north and Luxeuil-les-Bains in the south. Xertigny train station is about two kilometers west of the city center. It is on the Nancy - Belfort railway line operated by the TER Lorraine company.
Personalities
- André Serot (1896–1948), French colonel and military observer for the United Nations
- Émile Demangel (1882–1968), French track cyclist , died in Xertigny. A street is named after him and he is buried in the local cemetery.
