Fontenay is a French commune with 468 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in Grand Est . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipality of Bruyères-Vallons des Vosges .

Location of the municipality of Fontenay in the Vosges department

The municipality of Fontenay is located 13 kilometers northeast of Épinal , the capital ( prefecture ) of the Vosges department. The almost seven square kilometers large municipal area of Fontenay extends on the edge of a foothills of the Vosges that extends far to the southwest . The Ruisseau de Fontenay , a tributary of the Durbion , which drains to the Moselle, flows through the extensive settlement . The Ruisseau des Bolottes in the southeast of the municipality flows over the Saint-Oger to the Moselle. The highest point is 492 meters above sea level in the heavily forested south of the municipality ( Forêt Communale de Fontenay as part of the large Forêt d'Épinal ). There are also larger forest areas in the north ( Les Gotteaux, Hombois, Les Bouxaux ). Almost a third of the municipal area (230 ha) consists of forest.

The hamlet of Les Meix belongs to Fontenay .

Neighboring municipalities of Fontenay are Girecourt-sur-Durbion in the north, Méménil in the east, Le Roulier in the south, Aydoilles in the west and Dompierre in the north-west.

history

During the Ancien Régime , the village of Fontenay was partially under the spell of the municipality of Vaudéville or the municipality of Dompierre and was part of the bailiwick of Bruyères . Fontenay later belonged to the parish of Aydoilles . It was detached from Aydoilles in September 1793 and became an independent community. Ecclesiastically, Fontenay was a branch of the parish of Aydoilles. The Remiremont chapter received two thirds of the tithe .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are five farms in the municipality (cereal cultivation, cattle breeding). In addition, there are several smaller trading, craft and service companies. In addition, many residents commute to the nearby industrial city of Épinal.

In the north-west of the village the trunk road runs from Épinal to Saint-Dié-des-Vosges (D 420 or former RN 420 ). Other roads connect Fontenay with Méménil and Dompierre. There are rail connections in the nearby Épinal transport hub.
