history
The name Charmois comes from the Latin carpinetum for hornbeam (French charme ).
The double parish of Charmois-le-Roulier, which existed until 1830, was, like the neighboring parishes of Aydoilles and Deycimont, under the Dukes of Lorraine and Remiremont Abbey . The abbesses of the monastery and the provost of Bruyères shared the tithe : it amounted to four baskets of oats and six hens per year for each inhabitant of the villages.
By division in 1830, the municipality of Charmois-le-Rouillier became the municipalities of Charmois-devant-Bruyères and Le Roulier .
