geography
location
Sercœur is located about 13 kilometers southwest of Rambervillers and about 15 kilometers northeast of the departmental capital Épinal in flat undulating terrain between the river valleys of the Moselle and Mortagne .
Neighboring communities of Sercœur are Padoux in the northeast, Dompierre in the east, Aydoilles in the southeast, Vaudéville and Longchamp in the south, Dignonville in the southwest and Villoncourt in the northwest.
topography
The Durbion , a tributary of the Moselle, flows through Sercœur . The northern third of the 9.18 km² community area is forested ( Pimbois ). Here, with the 359 m high Haut de Pimbois, is the highest elevation in the otherwise poorly relief community area.
history
Since Gallo-Roman times there was a ford through the Durbion on the way from Remiremont to Saint-Dié at the site of today's village . Remiremont and Saint-Dié had become attractions in the 7th century thanks to their monasteries. Sercœur, located halfway between the two monasteries, was then called Cercorium . With the construction of a stone bridge over the Durbion, the importance and economic power of the village grew, the name of which developed from Cercœur to Sercœur . Like the neighboring villages, Sercœur was part of the Bailiwick in Épinal .
In March 1436, marauding gangs devastated and pillaged Sercœur after the attack on Épinal. This happened at a time when Lorraine was under power vacuum after the battle of Bulgnéville .
Ecclesiastically, Sercœur was part of the diocese of Saint-Dié; during the Ancien Régimes she was also part of the deanery of Épinal. In the 19th century the parish of Sercœur was a branch of the church in Châtel-sur-Moselle .
With the formation of the municipalities, Sercœur first came to the canton of Longchamp in 1793.
