Location of the commune of Éloyes in the Vosges department |
Éloyes is a French commune with 3180 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It is part of the Épinal arrondissement and the Porte des Vosges Méridionales municipal association .
geography
The industrial community of Éloyes lies on both sides of the upper Moselle , between the towns of Épinal and Remiremont in south-east Lorraine.
The municipal area of Éloyes extends from the Moselle valley, which is up to 1,500 meters wide here, in an easterly direction to the western foothills of the Vosges . At 783 meters above sea level, the Tête de Cuveaux is the highest point in the municipality of Éloyes. The mountain has an observation tower. From the mountain side, the Ruisseau de la Borne Martin and Ruisseau du Ramier flow into the Moselle, the latter forming part of the municipal boundary to Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont. West of the Moselle valley, the terrain rises in a striking step of 150 meters.
The lower areas in the Moselle valley of the municipal area are characterized by residential and commercial areas. To the south of the core town, the relief of the soil allows the areas to be used for agriculture. Pastureland adjoins the slopes. The densely wooded, higher lying area in the east of the municipality belongs to the Forêt de Fossard , which is part of a 150 square kilometer contiguous forest area.
Éloyes itself is divided into two parts by the Moselle. The old town center with the church is on the right, eastern bank of the Moselle; the western part is bounded on three sides by a loop of the Moselle. This part of the place is more recent and consists mainly of residential and commercial areas.
Neighboring municipalities of Éloyes are Jarménil in the north, Xamontarupt in the northeast, Tendon in the east, Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont and Saint-Nabord in the south and Pouxeux in the west.
history
The name Éloyes comes from the old French ez loye, which means something like lying on the water .
Shell stones and dolmens in the area of the Tête de Cuveaux suggest an early settlement of the area of the western Vosges.
During the Ancien Régime , Éloyes belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine , from 1751 to 1790 to the Chapitre de Remiremont . From 1790 Éloyes was the capital of a newly created constituency of the same name (canton), which was dissolved again in 1801.
Instead of an older church built in 1624, which was in danger of falling into disrepair, construction began in 1831 on the current church of l'Assomption de Notre-Dame.

Economy and Infrastructure
As in the other municipalities between Épinal and Remiremont, agriculture and forestry play only a subordinate role today. Eleven farms are located in Éloyes (fruit growing, dairy farming, cattle breeding). In addition to the traditional wood and paper industry ( vellum paper production ), smaller craft and trading companies have settled here.
Many workers from neighboring communities commute to the industrial park ( zone industrial) de la Plaine in the south of Éloyes. The larger establishments in Éloyes include:
- Glaces Thiriet - the third largest French manufacturer of ice cream
- a branch of the Plastigray group (production of plastic injection molding)
- Tenthoray SA , textile company established in 1906
- a subsidiary of the Japanese optical, medical and office technology manufacturer Konica Minolta
The two-lane route nationale 57 and the highways D 42 and D 157 (both from Épinal to Remiremont ) run through Éloyes parallel to the Moselle . A road from Éloyes to the neighboring municipality of Tendon runs over the 670 meter high Col de Bisoire pass . The Éloyes stop is on the Épinal – Bussang railway, which also follows the Moselle valley and is operated by the TER Lorraine company.
