Location of the commune of Dinozé in the Vosges department

Dinozé is a French commune with 604 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Épinal .

geography

Dinozé is located on the upper Moselle , immediately southeast of Épinal , the capital ( prefecture ) of the Vosges department.

The municipality of Dinozé, just under three square kilometers in size, comprises a section of the left (southern) bank of the Moselle and its hinterland east and west of the Ruisseau de Rainjumenil river , which rises near Dounoux on the Rhine / Rhône watershed and flows into the Moselle in Dinozé. The highest point is 477 meters above sea level, about 130 meters above the valley floor of the Moselle.

Half of the municipal area consists of forest ( Bois d'Arches ). The main settlement axis runs along the banks of the Moselle, and there are also farms scattered above the valley. Agricultural use is mainly limited to grazing areas on the slopes.

The district of Le Quéquement belongs to Dinozé .

Neighboring communities of Dinozé are Épinal in the west and north, Arches in the east and south and Dounoux in the southwest.

history

The municipality was created in 1932 from the eastern part of Saint-Laurent, now a district of Épinals, and the northernmost part of the municipality of Arches. There is still no historic village center and no church in the village.

Population development

The steady increase in population is mainly due to the influx of townspeople from nearby Épinal .

American war cemetery

In the east of the community there is an extensive American military cemetery ( Épinal American Cemetery / Cimetière militaire américain ) on a plateau above the Moselle . It was created in October 1944. On the 19.4 hectare cemetery area, to which a memorial is attached, are buried 5,255 American military personnel who died in the acts of war against the German Wehrmacht in eastern France and in fighting on the Rhine. The complex is under the American Battle Monuments Commission .

On the white grave crosses are the names of the fallen, the respective military units to which they belonged, as well as their place of origin and the date of death. The names of 424 missing persons are also engraved on the wall of a small chapel.
