Location of Vecoux in the Vosges department

Vecoux is a French commune with 870 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It is part of the Épinal arrondissement and the Porte des Vosges Méridionales municipal association .

geography

The municipality of Vecoux on the upper Moselle is located five kilometers south-east of the town of Remiremont in the Vosges , in south-east Lorraine .

The municipality of Vecoux includes a section of the Moselle valley and a small area west of the Moselle. Most of the municipality, however, includes the entire catchment area of the Ruisseau de Reherrey , a five-kilometer-long right tributary of the Moselle. The borders of the Reherrey catchment area are the ridges and saddles to the drainage areas of the Moselotte in the east and Ruisseau de Moinrupt in the south. At 871 meters above sea level, the highest point is reached in the extreme southeast of the municipality. The 786 meter high saddle of the Col du Xiard in the east leads into the Moselotto valley and is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Moselle valley, which is about 400 meters high in Vecoux, is characterized by residential and commercial areas, with little space left for agricultural use. The densely wooded area around the Reherreytal belongs to the 20 km² Forêt de Longegoutte . The valley floor and the adjacent slopes are interspersed with mountain farms and pastureland.

The settlement of Vecoux itself is located in the area of the Reherrey confluence with the Moselle, the valley of which here is widened to almost 1000 meters. A group of houses belonging to Vecoux is located on the right bank of the Moselle, connected to today's town center by a bridge. To the east, following the Reherrey upstream, the development loosens up.

Neighboring municipalities of Vecoux are Dommartin-lès-Remiremont in the west and north, Vagney and Thiéfosse in the east and Rupt-sur-Moselle in the south.

history

The place Vecoux appeared for the first time in 1296 in a document as Vescouz . He belonged to the Ban de Longchamp and thus to the sphere of influence of the Remiremont chapter . Together with the small settlement of Reherrey , the parish in Dommartin was responsible for Vecoux.

In 1858 the parish of Vecoux was founded, after which a separate church was built with Saint-Louis . Vecoux is one of the youngest municipalities in Lorraine.

Economy and Infrastructure

As in the other communities in the upper Moselle valley, agriculture only plays a subordinate role today. In 2007 two farmers were still working in the dairy farming and cheese making sectors in the municipality. The Reherreytal has now been developed for tourism through pensions and holiday homes. There are five forest holdings in the municipality.

The two largest employers in Vecoux are SEMO ( Société des Eaux Minerale d'Ogeu ) and BME ( Brosserie Mécanique de l'Est ). SEMO (known under the name PLASTIJO before 1996 ) mainly produces polyethylene foils for automated packaging, drawstring bags and foils for frozen and fresh food. BME is a company that produces brushes of all kinds, especially for use in industry.

Transport links

The heavily frequented RN 66 (European route 512) from Épinal via the Col de Bussang to Mulhouse runs along the left bank of the Moselle, separated from the town center. Vecoux on the right bank of the Moselle is connected by roads to the neighboring communities of Dommartin-lès-Remiremont and Rupt-sur-Moselle . The street name Rue de la Gare ( Bahnhofstrasse ) still reminds of the disused railway line from Remiremont to Bussang .
