The ban is a term for an area to be specified . It has appeared in the German language since the 10th century and mostly refers to the dominion , district , urban area or administrative district . In this context, the terms Bannwald , Wildbann and Bannmeile appear.

Municipal area

Especially in Switzerland , South Baden , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saarland and Alsace , the municipal area is still referred to as a ban or community ban. In the adjoining areas, the terms marking and district are predominantly used.

In north - western Switzerland, so-called ban days take place once a year , on which the municipal boundary is crossed and the process is monitored (ban walk).
