history

The place Portieux ( Portus Coelorum ) developed around a priory founded in 1107 near a ford over the Moselle, which was moved to Nancy in 1616 ( St. Leopold Monastery ).

A privilege to build a glassworks in the woods near Portieux was granted by Duke Leopold in 1705 . The recent history of Portieux is closely linked to the glassmaker's manufacture in the La Verrerie district ( German = glassworks ); glass production also shaped the design of the coat of arms.

The glassware production adapted to the requirements of the market over the decades. While drinking glasses and window glass were in the foreground at the beginning of the glassworks, mirrors, glass bottles, watch and lamp glasses and glass marbles soon followed. The glassworks enjoyed an enormous upswing with the production of bottles for bottling Contrexéville mineral water ( Contrex brand ). By 1850, one worker could produce up to 400 bottles per hour. A glass factory in Gironcourt-sur-Vraine , which is closer to Contrexéville and Vittel , was already producing 250 million bottles a year in 1964. While the Portieux glassworks had 539 employees in 1968, in 1978 there were still 308 employees. After a further creeping decline, the traditional manufactory became a glassblowing shop with 33 workers in 1996, which in 2005 shrank to 12 employees. Today crystal glasses - mostly individual pieces - are manufactured according to special customer requirements.

Population development

The population decline that has persisted since the 1960s can be attributed to the decline of the textile industry and glass production.
