Location of the municipality of Girancourt in the Vosges department |
Girancourt is a French commune with 896 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and since 2012 the municipal association Agglomération d'Épinal .
geography
The municipality of Girancourt is twelve kilometers west of Épinal , exactly in the geographical center of the Vosges department (mean values of the coordinates of the northernmost and southernmost and the easternmost and westernmost point).
In Girancourt, at 382 meters above sea level, there is a very low point of the European main watershed , which separates the Rhine and Saône catchment areas . That was one reason to create the apex of the Canal des Vosges , which connects the Moselle and Saône , at this point . The sources of the brooks Ruisseau du Breuil north and Ruisseau des Sept Pecheurs south of Girancourt, whose valleys the canal uses for ascent and descent, are only 1,300 meters apart.
About half of the 17.66 km² large municipal area consists of forests, the areas of which are concentrated in the east and west. In the north and south, arable land alternates with pastures and orchards.
The main settlement axis of the municipality runs from the old village center in a south-southeast direction over a length of three kilometers in a relaxed form to the district of Le Void de Girancourt . Girancourt also includes the district of Le Bois de Girancourt , two kilometers southeast of the core , which is already in the direct catchment area of the Bouzey reservoir (Réservoir de Bouzey) - today an important local recreation area for the nearby town of Épinal.
Girancourt's neighboring municipalities are Chaumousey in the north and northeast, Renauvoid in the east, Uzemain in the south and Dommartin-aux-Bois in the west.
history
At the time of the founding of the Deuilly Abbey in 1044, the area of today's municipality belonged to the ban of Girandi Curtis , which, in addition to Girancourt, also included the towns of Void-de-Girancourt, Audoncourt, Barbonfaing, Dommartin-aux-Bois, Hagémont, Méloménil, Nayémont, Renauvoid , Thiélouze and Uzemain and its center was in what is now Girancourt. In 1793 the municipality still had the spelling Grancourt .
Cont
In the area of the municipality are Fort de Girancourt and the Réduit du Thiéha (also called Fort Maryran ), two of the large fortifications built in a ring around Épinal after the Franco-German War .
The Fort de Girancourt is 422 meters above sea level in a forest southeast of the village center. It was built from yellow sandstone. The fort was supposed to provide the defense of the Canal des Vosges and the road from Épinal to Dijon . Construction of the fort began in 1879 and it was commissioned in 1890. By 1914, it was expanded several times. The crew consisted of up to 472 men. In addition to the armament, which consisted of numerous cannons and artillery, 100 tons of black powder and 700,000 rounds of ammunition were stored here. The facility also included an infirmary, a bakery, wells and cisterns. Between 1900 and 1906 the bunkers were expanded and a power station was added. Fort de Girancourt was an ammunition depot until the 1970s. It is now owned by the community and left to decay. Access to the fort is prohibited.
The fortified position of Réduit du Thiéha ( Fort Maryran ) is located at 456 meters above sea level immediately west of Void de Girancourt in a forest. Since construction began in 1885, it was also part of the defensive ring around Épinal with a crew of no more than 250 men. The complex is relatively well preserved and is now privately owned. The entrance portal collapsed in an earthquake in 2005. Access to the facility is also prohibited.
Population development
The quiet location near the Bouzey reservoir and the proximity to the departmental capital, Épinal , have attracted more and more townspeople to Girancourt over the past 20 years.
