The wooded surroundings and the water power of the Vologne were the main prerequisites for a wood and paper industry, which have a long tradition in Cheniménil and the municipality of Docelles immediately to the northeast . The oldest paper mills built in the 16th century were the François Hurault paper shop , the paper shop de l'Isle and the paper shop des Harlachol . The last watermill in Chénimenil was a flour mill that operated until the mid-19th century. In Docelles, the last paper mill (Papeteries de Docelles), which belonged to the Finnish UPM-Kymmene group, closed in 2014 .

The spinning mill in Cheniménil was the largest employer in the area for a long time; it closed in 2006 due to international competition.
