Avillers is a French commune with 84 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department of the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Mirecourt Dompaire, founded in 2017 .

geography

The municipality of Avillers is eight kilometers east of the small town of Mirecourt and about 25 kilometers northwest of Épinal in the hill country between the Moselle and Madon .

The 6.92 km² municipal area includes a section of the Madon tributary Xouillon and the terraced plateaus to the west and east, which are used intensively for agriculture. The north, west and south of the municipality is covered with forest ( Le Cotel, Bois du Haut de Camerelle, La Fontenotte, Bois Masson ), in the extreme south lies the highest point of the municipality of Avillers at 383 m above sea level.

Neighboring municipalities of Avillers are Gircourt-lès-Viéville in the north, Bouxurulles in the northeast, Jorxey in the southeast, Ahéville in the south, Vroville and Villers in the southwest and Chauffécourt in the northwest.

history

Avillers belonged to the Bailliage Darney in the Middle Ages ; ecclesiastically partly to the parish in Jorxey , partly to the parish Rabiémont in the neighboring village of Villers . The mayor's and school building ( Mairie-école ) dates from 1858.

Population development

With 84 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Avillers is one of the smallest communities in the Vosges department. After more than 400 people were counted in the first half of the 19th century, the population has steadily decreased since then and fell below the 100-inhabitant mark in the 1940s.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community has largely retained its character as a small farming village. There are two farms in the municipality (dairy farming, cattle breeding). Avillers is located off the main national transport routes. Two kilometers south of the village the road runs between Mirecourt and Nomexy in the Moselle valley. There are other road connections to Gircourt-lès-Viéville and Villers . The train station in the nearby town of Mirecourt is on the railway line from Nancy via Vittel to Merrey , which is operated by TER Lorraine .
