Hymont (1793 still with the spelling Himont ) is a French commune in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Mirecourt Dompaire .

geography

Location of the municipality of Hymont in the Vosges department

The municipality of Hymont, with 476 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located about 55 kilometers south of Nancy , 30 kilometers northwest of Épinal and 18 kilometers northeast of Vittel . The nearest small town Mirecourt is five kilometers from Hymont.

The approximately ten kilometers long Saule flows through Hymont and flows into the Moselle tributary Madon in the northeastern municipal area , which forms part of the northern and eastern municipal boundaries. The trough-shaped, 200-meter-wide valley of the Saule widens in Hymont. To the west of the village, the terrain rises 60 meters to an extensive plateau. In the northwest, the community has a 60 hectare portion of a forest area. The largest part of the community area consists of agricultural land that extends to the banks of the meandering Madon. The built-up area is closed and is based on two settlement axes that intersect in an x-shape.

Neighboring communities of Hymont are Mattaincourt in the north, Velotte-et-Tatignécourt in the east, Valleroy-aux-Saules in the south and Bazoilles-et-Ménil in the west.

history

Hymont was on the Roman road that led from Langres via Metz to Strasbourg . The name of the place, which probably comes from a Franconian named Hindonis , first appeared in 1247 in a deed of ownership by the Dukes of Lorraine .

Pierre Fourier from the neighboring parish Mattaincourt , canonized in 1847 , often preached in Hymont, where he met Alix Le Clerc , who lived here and who, with Fourier's help, founded the Augustinian Choir Women Congregation for the Education of Girls in 1597 .

The village of Hymont, like the surrounding towns of Mattaincourt and Mirecourt, was known nationwide for fine bed linen and lace until the middle of the 20th century.

Population development

After a strong population growth in the 1970s, there has been a steady decline in Hymont's population since 1990.
