La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges is a French commune with 499 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipality of Bruyères-Vallons des Vosges .

The municipality of La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges is located in the Vosges at an altitude of 430 m above sea level, 25 kilometers northwest of Gérardmer and 18 kilometers east of Épinal .

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​8.78 km² extends from the Moselle tributary Vologne , which forms the north-western municipality boundary, to the almost 650 m high of the l'Ancerf mountain range in the south. The section of the Volognetal in the area of ​​the municipality of La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges is up to 1000 m wide and offers space for a loose structure of fields, pastureland and settlement areas. About half of the municipal area is forested, especially in the south and east, where the forest edge follows approximately the 500 meter contour line.

history

In 1309, La Neuveville first appeared as Lai Nueveville , directly subordinate to the Dukes of Lorraine .

On October 30, 1907, the municipality was renamed by decree from La Neuveville to La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges in order to better distinguish it from two communities of the same name in the Vosges department.

On January 1, 1973, the previously independent municipalities of Le Boulay and Saint-Jean-du-Marché were incorporated into the municipality of La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges.

In the second half of the 19th century, the area around La Neuveville was known nationwide for starch production. In 1880 there were 153 starch producers in La Neuveville. Potatoes served as the starting point, while water mills on the Vologne provided energy. The last operation of this type closed in 1968 for reasons of profitability.
