Location of the municipality of Grandvillers
in the Vosges department

Grandvillers (1801 still with the spelling Grandviller ) is a French commune in the Vosges department of the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipality association Bruyères-Vallons des Vosges, founded in 2014 .

geography

The municipality of Grandvillers, with 753 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), is located on the western edge of the Vosges , about halfway between the towns of Épinal and Saint-Dié-des-Vosges .

The Arentèle , a tributary of the Mortagne, has its source in the municipality . The north-flowing streams in the area around Grandvillers come from a Vosges foothills that stretches to the southwest as far as the Moselle near Épinal and reaches heights of up to 550 meters above sea level.

Almost two thirds of the 17.46 km² municipal area is forested, with the largest portion falling on the Forêt de Faitre in the south.

Neighboring municipalities of Grandvillers are Pierrepont-sur-l'Arentèle in the north, Fremifontaine in the northeast, Brouvelieures in the east, Bruyères in the southeast, Fays in the south (point of contact), Viménil in the southwest and Gugnécourt in the west.

history

The current municipality emerged from the hamlets of L'Étang l'Abbé, Le Grand Mont and Le Petit Mont , which were connected by the road from Épinal to Saint-Dié.

Grandvillers can look back on a long industrial history. Paper production began in a mill here as early as 1821. A factory that manufactured cardboard packaging was also located nearby, which existed until 1987. In 1865 a brick factory was added, which produced until 1974 when a fire destroyed the entire company.
