Frizon is a French commune with 515 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Agglomération d'Épinal, founded in 2012 .

geography

Location of the municipality of Frizon in the Vosges department

Frizon is located on the lower Avière , a tributary of the Moselle , 14 kilometers northwest of Épinal , the capital (chef-lieu) of the department. The district of Le Voivre belongs to Frizon .

The municipality of Frizon extends on both sides of a 3.5 kilometer long section of the Moselle tributary Avière, which in the area of the municipality receives smaller streams from the plateau rising to the west. One of these streams, the Poinsot , divides the populated area into a lower and an upper village ( Frizon-Basse and Frizon-Haute ). The old village center lies on a spur above the confluence of the Poinsot and the Avière.

Over two thirds of the 11.75 km² community area is used for agriculture. Contiguous forest areas can be found in the north and south of the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities of Frizon are Vincey in the north, Nomexy in the northeast, Igney in the east, Capavenir Vosges and Mazeley in the south, Bouxières-aux-Bois in the southwest, Saint-Vallier and Regney in the west and Bettegney-Saint-Brice in the northwest.

history

The area around Frizon was already settled in Roman times. Excavations in 1934 uncovered a gold medal that is now kept in the Musée du Chapitre in Épinal . In 1861 a Roman road was discovered on the basis of evenly hewn limestone slabs, which came from the east in the direction of the Moselle and led past Frizon.

In 1104 the place appears as Frezoni's villa for the first time in a document from the Belval Priory (in what is now the municipality of Portieux on the Moselle).

In 1574 the villages of Upper and Lower Frizon were under Claude Bussignécourt , Lord of Damelevières .

After massive destruction during the Thirty Years' War by the Swedes and the troops of Louis XIV, Duke Stanislaus I. Leszczyński built a hunting lodge in the eighteenth century, which today serves as a restaurant.

In 1801 the parish still had the spelling Frison .

Due to the slippery slope of Bouzey on 27 April 1895, the three bridges were washed away in the village and flooded parts of the village. Four people were killed. From the hurricane that hit the region on July 11, 1984, the forests around Frizon have only recovered very slowly.

Population development

The population of Frizon has been at a constant, slightly fluctuating level since the 1970s. The municipality's goal is to reach and maintain the threshold of 500 inhabitants in order to ensure the operation of the primary school in the long term.
