Ramonchamp is a French commune with 1978 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It is part of the Épinal arrondissement and the Ballons des Hautes-Vosges municipal association .

geography

The municipality of Ramonchamp on the upper Moselle is located in the Vosges Mountains in the extreme southeast of Lorraine and borders the Franche-Comté region in the south . The next larger town, Remiremont, is 22 kilometers away.

The municipality of Ramonchamp extends from the valley of the Moselle, which is around 1000 meters wide here, to the ridge slopes north and south of the village. In the north, at 903 meters, the highest point in the municipality is reached. In the south, at a maximum height of 770 meters, there is a transition to a high plateau that forms the watershed to the catchment area of the Rhône . In the municipal area, two mountain streams, whose valleys cut deep into the mountains, flow into the Moselle: from the northeast the Ruisseau du Ménil , from the south the Ruisseau de l'Etat .

One third (500 hectares) of the 15.74 km² municipal area is covered by forest, which belongs to the forest areas Forêt Domaniale du Géhant and Bois du Ménil . The narrow Moselle valley allows only narrow arable land, on the lower mountain slopes, pastures dominate.

The old village center with the church is on the left bank of the Moselle, while the much larger settlement area is on the right bank.

The neighboring communities of Ramonchamp are Saulxures-sur-Moselotte in the north, Le Ménil in the northeast, Le Thillot in the east, Haut-du-Them-Château-Lambert and Servance-Miellin with Servance in the south, Beulotte-Saint-Laurent in the southwest and Ferdrupt in the West.

history

The name Ramonchamp can be derived from the old French word for gorse , which is common in the upper Moselle valley. Already in Roman times the route from Metz to Basel led over the upper Moselle valley and thus through Ramonchamp.

The oldest building in the village is now the Saint-Remy-et-Saint-Blaise church from 1685.

Local government ( Mairie )

Before the French Revolution, the scattered settlement structure around Ramonchamp belonged to the abbesses of the Chapitre de Remiremont . Today's community was created after the towns of Le Thillot and Ferdrupt split off .

Until the middle of the 19th century, the inhabitants lived from agriculture and livestock farming, and the farmers also earned their living as lumberjacks, craftsmen, joiners, clog makers and team leaders.

Around 1830 the structure of employment changed in Ramonchamp and in the surrounding communities of the upper Moselle valley, when small spinning and weaving mills emerged. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871, the textile industry experienced a new, increased boom through the settlement of Alsatian companies who had fled the Germans.

The textile industry began to decline in the 1970s. Only gradually could new jobs be created, including in plastics and metal processing and in mechanical engineering.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are 13 farms in the municipality (dairy farming, horse, cattle and poultry breeding). In the southeast of the commune, the Champs de la Croix industrial zone was established. The industrial companies based in Ramonchamp today include:

  • VT2i (previously TRW France , automotive supplier)
  • Francis Jacquel (machine and tool construction)
  • Jean Paul Vuillemard (metalworking, laser cutting)

In addition, many residents of the upper Moselle valley commute to the industrial areas around Remiremont.

The heavily frequented Route nationale 66 (European route 512) from Épinal via the Col de Bussang to Mulhouse leads through the local area of Ramonchamp. Various noise protection measures were carried out along the E 512 by 2008. A narrow road leads north over the Col de Morbieux at an altitude of 790 meters into the valley of the Moselotte . The former station building and the street name Rue de la Gare are reminiscent of the now disused railway line from Remiremont to Bussang .

partnership

Ramonchamp has maintained a community partnership with Ober-Olm in Rheinhessen since 1972 .
