Fiménil is a French commune with 227 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipality of Bruyères-Vallons des Vosges .

The municipality of Fiménil is located in the Vosges at an altitude of 420 m above sea level, about halfway between Épinal and Saint-Dié .

The area of ​​the 5.13 km² municipal area covers a section of the Vologne valley . The Vologne rises on the Vosges ridge, changes its direction of flow by 90 ° from northwest to southwest near Fiménil. In the northern half of the municipality there is arable land and pastureland, the southern half is characterized by forests ( Forêt Communale de Fiménil, Bois de la Haie ). At 664  m , the Stéaumont in the southwest on the border with the municipality of Lépanges-sur-Vologne reaches the highest point in the municipality of Fiménil.

Fiménil includes the hamlets and farms of Le Blanc Champ, La Haie, La Grande Goutte, Pierre Raimbeau, Stéaumont and Le Champ François .

Neighboring municipalities of Fiménil are Champ-le-Duc in the north, Beauménil in the east, Laveline-du-Houx in the south, Lépanges-sur-Vologne in the south-west, Prey in the west and Laval-sur-Vologne in the north-west.

history

The village was called Fimesnil until 1793 . During the Ancien Régime it belonged to the bailiwick of Bruyeres and to the parish of Champ-le-Duc, which was dependent on the chapter in Remiremont . Measurements in 1867 calculated the following land use on a total area of ​​513 ha:

The most important crops at that time were wheat, oats and potatoes. There was a quarry, starch factory and flour mill in the middle of the 19th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest company in the area is the Novatissue SAS paper mill in Laval-sur-Vologne , a subsidiary of the Italian Cartiere Luccese Spa (Lucart) just a few hundred meters northwest of the core town of Fiménil. The company produces cardboard boxes for food packaging as well as paper towels, toilet paper and handkerchiefs. He is continuing the more than 150-year-old paper processing tradition in the Volognetal . There are also service businesses and three agricultural businesses (dairy farming) in the village.

The road from Bruyères to Docelles (D 44) following the Volognetal leads north past Fiménil. The road forms one of the two direct connections between Épinal and Saint-Dié , the two largest cities in the department. The nearest train station is in the nearby town of Bruyères on the Arches- Saint-Dié railway line operated by TER Lorraine .
