history

In 1343 the place appeared for the first time as Waymesnillo . Twenty years later the village of Wasmaisnil was written . It is believed that the prefix goes back to a Germanic name ( Wazu ). maisnil or mesnil is a common place name that stands for small farm or small yard . The place name changed from Wyesineus in 1402 to Vymaingnel (1455), Vyemesni (1487), Wimenil (1564) and Vymesnil (1594) to Voismesnil in 1656. Since 1753 the form Viménil has been in use.

Viménil originally belonged to the bailiwick of Bruyères and was part of the ban of Dompierre . The parish of Viménil was an annex to the parish of today's neighboring parish of Gugnécourt . In 1767 the Church of St. Jacob ( Église Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur ) received the first of its three bells. She weighed 277 kg and was 78 cm in diameter. The second bell (384 kg and 87 cm diameter) followed in 1793 and the third and largest bell (485 kg and 94 cm diameter) only followed in 1861.

The situation on the west side of the Vosges was the doom of the forests around Viménil when hurricane Lothar moved from the Atlantic to Central Europe on December 26, 1999.
