Fresse-sur-Moselle is a French commune with 1738 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department of the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It is part of the Épinal arrondissement and the Ballons des Hautes-Vosges municipal association .

geography

The community of Fresse on the upper Moselle is located in the Vosges in the extreme southeast of the historic Lorraine region and borders the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in the south . The next larger town, Remiremont, is 25 kilometers away.

The municipality of Fresse-sur-Moselle extends from the valley of the Moselle, which is about 400 meters wide here, to the ridges north and south of the village. In the north of the municipality rise up to 1060 meters high mountains, the highest point in the municipality is reached with 1190 meters ( Tête de Noireboche ) in the south. This is also where the watershed to the Saône catchment lies . In the municipal area, two mountain streams, whose valleys cut deep into the mountains, flow into the Moselle: from the north the Ruisseau de la Colline de Fresse , from the south the Ruisseau de Presles .

About half of the 18.4 km² municipal area is covered by forests that belong to the forest areas Bois de Maxéromont and Bois de la Fonderie . At over 500 meters above sea level in the Moselle valley, there is hardly any economic arable farming, which is why pastures dominate the valley and lower slopes.

Neighboring municipalities of Fresse-sur-Moselle are Le Ménil in the north, Bussang in the east, Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle in the southeast, Haut-du-Them-Château-Lambert in the southwest and Le Thillot in the west.

history

Already in Roman times the route from Metz to Basel led over the upper Moselle valley and thus through Fresse. The place Fresse belonged to the Ramonchamp ban before the French Revolution

Lead and copper were mined near the place from 1550 to 1750.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the inhabitants lived from the livestock industry, and the farmers also earned their living as lumberjacks, craftsmen, joiners, clog makers and team leaders.

Around the middle of the 19th century, the structure of income changed in Fresse and in the surrounding communities in the upper Moselle valley, when small spinning and weaving mills emerged. The textile industry saw its decline in the 1970s.
