Location of the commune of Pouxeux in the Vosges department |
Pouxeux (1793 still with the spelling Pouzeux ) is a French commune with 1992 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Épinal .
geography
Pouxeux is halfway between the towns of Épinal and Remiremont on the Moselle .
The municipality of Pouxeux extends from the valley on the left bank of the upper Moselle, which is up to 800 meters wide here, to a plateau 200 meters higher, which rises in a striking step towards the southwest. On the opposite side of the river Pouxeux, the Vologne, a 50-kilometer-long tributary that rises in the area of the Vosges ridge , flows into the Moselle. Over a length of five kilometers, the Moselle forms the municipal boundary in the northeast.
The lower locations in the Moselle valley of the 14.36 km² community area are characterized by residential and commercial areas. To the south of the core town there are agricultural areas up to almost 500 meters above sea level, which mainly consist of pastures. A contiguous forest ( Forêt de Saint-Nabord-Longuet ) extends above the meadows and over the entire southern half of the municipality .
Neighboring communities of Pouxeux are Archettes and Jarménil in the north, Éloyes in the east, Saint-Nabord in the south, Raon-aux-Bois in the southwest and Arches in the west.
history
The nucleus of the village of Pouxeux emerged from a few fishermen's and farmhouses on the banks of the Moselle under the spell of Arches . The first recorded name of the place is Pexeï . Via Poucheu and Pouxeu , he slowly developed into Pouxeux.
In the Thirty Years' War, Pouxeux, like the entire upper Moselle valley, was badly affected. In 1655 the plague broke out after soldiers had been billeted. It decimated the population of the village, which at that time still consisted of an upper and a lower village. The population fell from 158 to 12. After the Peace of the Pyrenees of 1659, life gradually returned to the devastated areas and there were now 56 inhabitants again. The church, dedicated to the martyrs Gorgon and Nabor , was built in 1683.
Pouxeux belonged to Remiremont Abbey from 1766 until the French Revolution .
The hydropower of the Moselle and the abundance of forests gave rise to wood processing companies in and around Pouxeux, to which the textile industry was added from the middle of the 19th century. In 1804 the community had 981 inhabitants, in 1870 already 1,905 inhabitants.

Economy and Infrastructure
As in the other municipalities between Épinal and Remiremont, agriculture and forestry play only a subordinate role today. In addition to the traditional wood industry, smaller craft and trading companies, a weaving mill and a building materials company have set up shop. In Pouxeux there are three supermarkets, two bakeries, a gas station, an optician, a florist, a sporting goods store, an ironmonger and a bookshop. In addition, many workers commute to the numerous industrial areas of the neighboring communities in the Moselle valley.
The two-lane national road 57 and the D 157 (both from Épinal to Remiremont ) run through Pouxeux parallel to the Moselle . The Pouxeux stop is on the Nancy- Épinal-Remiremont railway line, which also follows the Moselle valley and is operated by the TER Lorraine company.
The municipality is now the owner of the former to the firm position Epinal belonging Fort d'Arches
