Agudo , officially Portuguese Município de Agudo , is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil . It is located about 240 km west of Porto Alegre . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 16,461 inhabitants, who live in a municipality area of around 534.6 km² and are called Agudenses ( agudenses ). The city ranks 115th out of 497 municipalities in the state.

history
Agudo emerged from the Colônia Santo Ângelo founded in 1857 . The first German immigrants were Lutherans from Pomerania. The emancipation as a self-governing municipality took place on February 16, 1959. Originally Agudo was part of the municipalities of Cachoeira do Sul and Sobradinho .
